The Community Configuration project marks a significant step towards empowering Wikimedia communities to tailor on-wiki functionality to their specific needs. By shifting certain decision-making authority from WMF teams to wiki administrators, Community Configuration fosters a collaborative environment where local communities have greater control over feature customization. Join this session to delve deeper into Community Configuration, see which features will be the first ones to be community-configurable and actively participate in shaping its future alongside WMF teams, including Growth, Editing, and Moderator Tools.


Join us for an insightful session about the Community Configuration project and the software currently under development at the WMF which will leverage it. This new MediaWiki extension is aimed at empowering Wikimedia communities to tailor on-wiki functionality to their specific needs.

Join us to learn how Community Configuration promotes collaboration, empowers communities, and shapes the future of feature development within the Wikimedia ecosystem. The session will start by exploring the project's objectives and current status, followed by a showcase of how Automoderator or Edit check make use of Community Configuration. At the end of the session, we will spend time answering questions and collaboratively discussing the future of Community Configuration, Automoderator, and Edit Check.

It empowers local communities to take control of customization, fostering a more inclusive and participatory environment within the Wikimedia ecosystem.

Martin Urbanec is a Senior Software Engineer, working with the Growth team, mostly focused on the area of Community Configuration and mentorship. He cares about ensuring autonomy of the Wikimedia communities by giving them an option to change how MediaWiki works. Outside of his role at the Wikimedia Foundation, Martin volunteers as a Wikimedia Steward, serving all Wikimedia projects.

I'm part of the Wikimedia Foundation's Movement Communications team. I help product teams and communities speak to each other. My main work field is newcomers' first steps.
