WikiOutdoor Training
10.08, 10:00–10:25 (Poland), Lviv (21+22+23) (interpretation)
Language: English

There are numerous outdoor projects implemented around the Wikiworld in the form of expeditions, photohunts and outdoor workshops. Many of the activities in these projects require specific skills that are typically not acquired through the traditional trainings in the movement. The WikiOutdoor Training is a planned event that aims to develop such specific skills so that participants get inspired to conduct and successfully implement outdoor projects. This lecture will present the idea in detail and present the results from the research conducted in the regions of Central and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.

WikiOutdoor Training is a planned outdoor event which aims to develop leadership and organisational skills for conducting outdoor events. The participants will learn how to identify underrepresented topics, discover and navigate to places of interest, produce quality images and multimedia, search reference works and document the underrepresented topics on the Wikimedia projects.

The primary target participants are people who are active and/or have a desire to be active in the expeditionary projects in their countries. The aim will be to find people who want to research before the expeditions and are good with editing on Wikipedia, people who want to take images, people who want to fly drones, and people who want to drive to specific locations.

The main objectives of the WikiOutdoor Training are the following:

  • improve leadership and organisational skills for conducting outdoor activities (e.g. expeditions,
    photohunts, outdoor trainings etc.) in other parts of CEE as well as in Central Asia;
  • improve skills for identifying underrepresented topics on the Wikimedia projects related to geography, natural heritage and cultural heritage;
  • improve skills for discovering and accessing reference works on the identified underrepresented topics in collaboration with external stakeholders (e.g. GLAMs, educational institutions etc.);
  • improve navigational skills for discovering and mapping places of interest that are mentioned in reference works but are not geolocated;
  • improve photographic and video-making skills for documenting the underrepresented topics, including skills for mastering aerial photography and videography; and
  • improve editing skills on documenting the underrepresented topics on the Wikimedia projects.

A preliminary research on the idea has already been done with people from communities in the regions of Central and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. The current steps are focused on promoting the idea to community members from other regions in order to get more insights about its viability.
