Language: English

Generative AI continues to bring new opportunities, risks, and open questions to the Wikimedia movement. Learn about the key generative AI activities happening within various departments at the Wikimedia Foundation (including Product & Technology, Legal, and Advancement). Topics covered will include: technical infrastructure, tooling, research and innovation; regulation and advocacy; ethical/sustainable AI considerations.

This presentation aims to give attendees an overview of key activities being undertaken by the Wikimedia Foundation to track and respond to developments in generative artificial intelligence tools and technology. Representatives from different departments at the foundation – including Product & Technology, Legal, and Advancement – will discuss the following:

  1. What have we done since last year's AI conversations at Wikimania?
  2. What are we building, experimenting with, learning, and advocating for now?
  3. What do we want to do in the coming year?

By the end of this session you will learn about:
1. Some of the latest work in the Wikimedia Foundation to test and develop AI powered technologies that can help our Movement advance its free knowledge sharing mission
2. Our work to assure that AI powered tools and technologies, their applications and regulatory approaches to AI do not damage our communities and projects
3. What some of our plans for the coming months are and how you can join in
