Language: English

In October 2023, the third WikiWomen Camp convened in India, marking its return after 7-years. Participants gathered to address the gender gap within the movement under the theme of "Rise Up, Map Up." This session aims to share developments during and after WikiWomen Camp and to invite diverse community members to learn about ways to shape the next steps for collectively closing the gender gap. Additionally, preliminary outcomes from the WikiWomen Summit x Wikimania in Poland will be shared to facilitate broader community engagement with gender gap priorities.

In October 2023, the third WikiWomen Camp convened in India after 7 years since the last one held in Mexico in 2017. This convening brought together Wikimedia contributors and partners to address the imperative of "Rise Up, Map Up," focusing on collective learning on how to research, contribute to, and advance efforts in closing the gender gap within the Wikimedia movement. The theme of WikiWomen Camp suggested that "that women and non-binary people need to map out their goals, aspirations, and potential obstacles, and then rise up to overcome them." Now, we invite others in the movement to join us to help shape the ways in which we can overcome these barriers.

This Wikimania session is designed to engage diverse Wikimedia contributors on the outcomes and next steps following WikiWomen Camp and WikiWomen Summit. During the session, WikiWomen Camp organizers and WikiWomen contributors will invite shared insights from the Wikimedia movements that can help develop a cohesive agenda to enhance inclusivity within our movement. Key topics to be covered include:
-- Planned outreach to share the next steps following WikiWomen activities;
-- The WikiWomen Declaration and Engagement Plan,
-- Available collaboration and contribution spaces to help shape WikiWomen priorities; and
-- Ways to get involved in helping to champion the WikiWomen work in the movement and beyond, including through the formation of a WikiWomen Steering Committee.

Additionally, we will share initial outcomes from the WikiWomen Summit x Wikimania in Poland 2024, aiming to foster widespread participation and engagement from the Wikimedia communities on how to work together to close the gender gap. Contributors and allies committed to gender equity within our movement are thus invited to our session to share their strategies and priorities, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of collaboration needs and opportunities.

How does your session relate to the event themes: Collaboration of the Open?*

This session is inspired by the collective efforts of Wikimedians contributors to close the gender gap since it was identified in 2010. Through the work of the community, the gender gap has been slowly closing, shifting from 10% to roughly 20% of articles being about notable women. Organizers and contributors working on the gender gap, have been an important part of this work that makes our movement more equitable. To scale their efforts and invite more Wikimedians and partners to join us, this session is designed to facilitate open collaboration on the gender gap. Following WikiWomen Camp and WikiWomen Summit x Wikimania 2024, this session will help share more information with contributors on how they can contribute to the strategic efforts at closing the gender gap and making the movement a welcoming and inclusive space for all.
