Older Vs Younger generations, How the generation gap can affect the work on Wikimedia Projects?
08-10, 10:00–10:25 (Poland), Belgrade (8)
Language: English

Effective communication is key to prevent conflicts, crucial in collaborative platforms like Wikimedia, where documenting conflicts can guide efforts to improve collaboration. We have noticed the importance of this topic through our conversations with the Arabic Wikimedians Community that led us to diagnose the gap happening between different generations.
We aim to collect more qualitative and quantitative data regarding this matter to include the outcomes in our presentation.

Our main objectives will be:
Define the “generation gap” which exists between the young and the old.
Differences between cultures in the way and degree of respecting older people.
How can the generation gap result in differences in opinions and outlooks between the generations
How can it result in conflict and communication difficulties?
How can it affect the work in Wikimedia projects which are open to everyone?
Cases of conflict between generations (gathered by the online form)

How does your session relate to the event themes: Collaboration of the Open?*

The Wikimedia movement is open to anyone, anyone who shares our goals and vision can join. Therefore, we, as community members, have many variations and this is what makes our community an outstanding one but also this creates many challenges. One of these challenges is the generation gap which we may face in online or face-to-face discussion and if we spot light on it we will understand it more and many issues will be solved automatically.
